The Athenaeum Hotel, Piccadilly, London, W1

Project name: The Athenaeum Hotel, Piccadilly, London, W1
Client name: Structura UK Limited
Value:£ 540,000
Completion date: 2009/05/01

Following the successful tender submission to our client Structura UK Limited, our work began with the erection of scaffolding to the Athenaeum Hotel, Piccadilly, London

Our in-house qualified Service Engineer was instructed to commence drafting up scaffold proposals of working scaffolds, this would encompass those works intended to be carried out including: asbestos removal, window removal, demolition and building works, and window replacement. Our Engineer worked closely with our client in order to address their requirements and submit the calculations for approval.

Scaffold licences were produced and submitted for approval prior to commencement.

We began by erecting a supporting scaffold within the basement, to prop and support the scaffold and gantry above to both Down Street and Piccadilly elevations.

Scaffold was erected in accordance with BS EN 12811-1:2003 and follows good practice guidelines for the erection of scaffolding.

Following the basing out of the scaffold structure we continued with the erection of a fully independent access scaffold, fully boarded with internal ladder access; a total of 10 lifts were installed.

Restrictions of no more than 3 levels of scaffold were to be boarded out at any one time, due to the downward force produced by the scaffold structure and basement weight loadings.

The entire scaffold was fixed into the building using M16 Hilti HKD-E Knock-in Anchors at 1.8m c/c. estimated position for anchors approx. 200mm were tied into the Travertine facade corresponding with the Engineer's drawings.
During the erection of the scaffolding a supporting gantry, supported by the basement shoring scaffold, was erected to allow for site storage to the full length of the Piccadilly elevation.

Due to the nature and design of the scaffold a passenger goods hoist was installed to Piccadilly elevation, providing full means of access to each scaffold lift from gantry level to 10th floor. The hoist also provided means of distributing materials and equipment throughout the duration of the contract.

The entire gantry was double boarded and polythene-protected to ensure no debris from the gantry and associated lifts above could prove a danger/hazard to workers and members of the public below.

The projecting gantry was fully hoarded and painted to both elevations, encapsulating all scaffold tube and fittings prior to the installation of the artwork.
